The Warriors had plenty of opportunities to make plays Saturday in their opening game in the Holiday Park Baseball Club Memorial Tournament, but didn't.
After their scheduled first game was postponed by rain, they faced the AAA Iowa Yankees at 4 p.m. in West Des Moines. The Yankees scored three runs in the top of the first inning, but the Warriors responded with two of their own in the bottom half.
The Yankees pushed across three more runs in the third and fourth innings, while the Warriors went three and out both times. Trailing 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth, the Warriors nearly completed a two-out rally.
Patrick Karamitros started it off with a single to left center, his second of the game. Jordy Brown followed with a singe to center. He and Dalton Weems, pinch running for Karamitros, advanced on a wild pitch. Michael Daughtery walked to load the bases, but Brown was picked off at second base.
The Yankees scored two more runs in the sixth inning to win 8-2.
Max Versteegh took the loss, despite allowing just two earned runs in five strong innings.
The Warriors are scheduled to face Those Guys From Oakview Park at 10 a.m. Sunday. Those Guys, classified as a Major, beat the Yankees 3-0 Friday night. Sunday's winner will likely advance to play in the championship bracket Sunday night. A Warrior loss would put them in the silver bracket with a 4 p.m. game to end this tournament run.
