The Warriors swept the Vinton Vikings on Saturday in the year's first road trip.
Game one at Marv Lindsey Field was a slug fest as the Warriors pounded out a season-high 15 hits, including two each from Ryan Niemeyer, Will Teubel and Patrick Karamitros at the bottom of the order. The Warriors jumped out to an 11-0 lead, and held on for victory as the Vikings scored 9 runs in the fourth and fifth innings. A four run sixth sealed the deal for the Warriors.
Max Versteegh got the win after allowing just one earned run in four innings.
Game two was a different story as the Warriors fell behind 6-0 after three innings. Teubel's breakout performance was particularly key in the fourth and fifth innings, when he drove in two runs as the Warriors tied the game at seven. Coming on in relief in the top of the sixth, Zach Zingula let the defense do its job and was rewarded with his first win of the year.
In the bottom of the inning, Jordy Brown led off with a triple to left field and scored on a wild pitch to win the game. Brown scored five runs on the day and stole six bases.
The Warriors are off this week as 8th grade practice starts Monday and the freshmen have a double header Friday night in Waterloo. Action in the Holiday Park Memorial Tournament in West Des Moines begins Saturday with a 10 a.m. match with Those Guys.
