For the first time this year, the Warriors were shutout Saturday afternoon in a 2-0 loss to the Quad Cities Lightning in game two of the Harley Steel Memorial Tournament. Sometimes umpires -- and coaches too -- make errors.
Jordy Brown went the distance at pitcher for the second time this season, but took the loss despite allowing just one earned run in five innings. Brown tried to help his own cause in the third inning when he singled up the middle and stole second base. As he was stealing third, the catcher's throw sailed into foul territory. The left fielder's throw home was superb, but Brown appeared to be safe on the play. The umpire saw it differently.
The Warriors threatened again in the fourth inning after a double to left field by Michael Daughtery. Zach Zingula followed with a blast to center field that looked like a sure hit. Coach John Morgan waived Daughtery home as the center fielder just managed to make the catch.
With two outs, Robert Hogg reached on an error by the shortstop and advanced to second on a single to left field by Max Versteegh. A double steal put two runners in scoring position before Dalton Weems struck out swinging.
The Warriors went three-and-out in the fifth and sixth innings to fall to 1-1 on the day. Seeded fourth after pool play, the Warriors are scheduled to play the fifth-seeded Angels at 8 a.m. Sunday. The Angels beat Swisher Swat 6-5 and lost to the Galesburg Thunder 9-0.
The Warriors split with the Angels last Saturday, winning 7-5 and losing 7-4. The winner Sunday advances to play the #1 seeded Thunder at 11:30.
